CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Rose Lalonde
ALIAS: Thorn
CANON: Homestuck
AGE: 16
GENDER: Female
OCCUPATION: Student (off-campus living please)
AU BACKGROUND:
Born to an extremely wealthy but eccentric mother from what can only be assumed was a drunken one night stand, most of Rose's life has been spent in relative isolation. Her mother's home in upstate New York was spacious but cut off from most people thanks to its location. The decision to homeschool Rose only further kept her away from other children her age - not that it mattered much, as she didn't think very highly of the ones she'd been exposed to. She'd rather spend hours alone in her mother's library and was secretly a little pleased that her odd ways had scared them off (ten year olds were wary of others their age who could recite Lovecraft. who knew?).
Perhaps it was all of this free time to live mostly with her own thoughts and the ponderous words of authors that spurred the friction with her mother. Certainly Ms. Lalonde didn't do anything to help the problem, being mostly oblivious to it in her near-constant state of drunkenness. Rose felt that every action she took caused her mother to be continuously disappointed in her, to the point of taking up passive-aggressive actions to cruelly mock the things she was interested in. She had no choice but to respond in kind, as to let these jabs slide would be to let her win.
And Rose hated losing.
For most of her life she and her mother remained locked in a perpetual stalemate of one-upmanship, neither gaining the upper hand for more than a few days as Rose continued her literary consumption of twisted fantasies and treatises on the human mind. Until she turned thirteen, it looked like neither of them would ever be able to break free of the rut that they'd fallen into.
Sometime during her thirteenth year, however, Rose's mutant ability manifested. At first she was unaware that it was anything more than a frequent sense of deja vu, but soon enough the visions came more vividly and demanded her attention. With time she found that she could even conjure them up at will if she concentrated hard enough; it was an exhilarating discovery and something that she took great pride in despite failing to inform anyone else. This made her special. Even better, it meant that she could know everything if she wanted to.
For a time she was content to use her newfound ability to see her mother's next move before it occurred and plan accordingly, or watch for the perfect moment to trip up a particularly annoying boy from town who would taunt her penchant for toting around thick books when she accompanied her mother on errand runs. She was magical and unbeatable and completely satisfied that her future was bright.
Unfortunately, she'd always been the biggest danger to herself. On her sixteenth birthday the boiling resentment Rose felt towards her mother finally exploded when Ms. Lalonde (in a rare moment of clarity and directness) questioned one of the many passive-aggressive remarks her daughter had made towards her. The argument quickly escalated into a painful deconstruction of Rose's perceptions on her mother's opinions about her, and in a momentary loss of composure Rose lashes out and slaps Ms. Lalonde - who promptly drops to the floor dead.
Rose is horrified at what she initially assumes is a result of a lifetime of hard drinking with very little care as to the consequences. However, when nudging her cat out of the way to reach the phone and dial 911 results in his death as well, she's forced to confront the single awful conclusion left to her: precognition is not her only mutation, and the other has manifested itself with devastating effects.
It didn't take long for Project X-Odus to pick up on the fleeing mutant and offer her safe passage to and sanctuary in Genosha. Having no other viable option that didn't end in a painful death, Rose accepted.
That doesn't mean she has to be happy about it.
PERSONALITY:
Serious and bristling with dry humor, Rose is incredibly rational for a teenager. Her speech is pristine, albeit packed with complex words; this is because she's incredibly intelligent for her age, having read up considerably on the topics that interest her. In fact, she may have read up just a bit too much - Rose has a tendency to be long-winded and dense, often using paragraphs to explain things that would just as easily have been conveyed in a sentence. Despite her efforts to tone down the rhetoric, she can't help sharing her thoughts and theories on whatever subject is being broached.
The difficulty in keeping things to the point may be because in all other areas of her life Rose is an extremely private person. She prefers to keep her thoughts, intentions, and emotions to herself. Although she typically presents a civil demeanor, people who attempt to delve any further than casual acquaintance will find themselves face to face with a brick wall preventing any progress. Coupled with her penchant for sarcasm it's difficult to discern what exactly Rose is going or intends to do, and that's just the way she likes it.
Rose is incredibly sarcastic and cynical, seeing everything through jade-colored glasses. She has difficulty acknowledging that the actions of others may in fact be sincere as opposed to a passive-aggressive jab at her or cruel irony. This applies not just to people she dislikes but to her friends as well; her entire relationship with her mother was based around the assumption that all of her actions and efforts resulted but nothing in disappointment from the older woman's side and that every gift and 'caring' gesture was simply her way of cruelly mocking her. Because of her competitive nature, such actions prompt Rose to engage in a campaign of passive-aggressive one-upmanship in order to come out on top of the theoretical battle of sarcasm.
These battles show off Rose's ridiculous determination and frequent need to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to 'win' in a situation. The struggle between her mother and herself lasted until the day Ms. Lalonde killed her and included such outrageous actions as having thank you notes legally notarized and the purchase of facetious Mother's Day gifts to make subtle digs at her mother's flaws.
Rose's interests have always tended towards the more macabre side; she enjoys delving into the seedy depths of the human mind through psychoanalysis as well as psychological horror in the form of Lovecraftian mythology. Even before her mutant powers manifested she'd always secretly enjoyed fairytales of chosen heroes with special abilities arising to save the day in the nick of time, wishing that someday she could play a similar role. This desire has only been moderately tempered by the chaos actually receiving powers has become for Rose; she still hopes that she can find a way to master her abilities and do something amazing for the world, if only to prove to herself and her dead mother that she isn't a monstrous failure.
The manifestation of Rose's death touch has made her incredibly conflicted on her opinion of herself - she hates that something so massive is out of her control (something she strives for in all areas of her life) and has made her a monster in the eyes of most people including on occasion herself. On the other hand, she relishes the vast power that she now has over people and how much damage she could do if she were so inclined. Although she's still unsure on where she falls in her own self-image, Rose is determined to reign in her powers without any help and force them to work for her no matter what it takes. She's perfectly confident in her ability to do so without slipping up, as she knows where the line is and what actions cross it.
This confidence stems both from her high intelligence and the fact that despite her ambiguity towards her mutations she still uses her precognition abilities quite frequently. As she typically neglects to inform other people about the specifics of her powers Rose often comes across as uncannily accurate in prediction making as well as insufferably smug, impressions which she finds amusing and often doesn't do much to correct.
Although Rose projects an aura of icy arrogance and does her best to push people away from her both in order to keep them safe and because she still can't help but feel a little disdainful of most people just as she did in upstate New York, underneath the layers of armor and self-imposed isolation lies a sentimental side. She's kept her childhood home the same way her mother did despite the bad memories attached to it and has packed some items of Ms. Lalonde's in the things she took to Genosha - including a pink scarf which she frequently uses in her outfits.
Despite her difficulty in expressing emotions of her own, Rose is an incredibly loyal friend who goes to any extreme necessary in order to protect those dear to her heart. She's aware of her own faults and cherishes the people who put up with her despite them, even if in the back of her mind she wonders if any misfortune that befalls them won't eventually be her own fault.
APPEARANCE: Ta-da. Thanks to her mutation Rose's outfits perpetually consist of long sleeves and skirts, gloves, and a headscarf that typically covers everything but her eyes (although she will unpin it to reveal her entire face with people she's more comfortable around).
She has numerous outfits, but no matter what she's wearing it covers every inch of her skin.
POWERS: Rose has two mutations; the first is precognition, the ability to see into the future. Rose's visions usually center around herself or the people she knows, although with effort and concentration she can see outside of this range. Naturally the visions come to her unbidden and without warning, although she's been able to train herself to See of her own accord. Her visions aren't set in stone and on occasion Rose has even used them herself as a guideline for what not to do, but for the most part she's very accurate.
Her most vivid (and disturbing) visions come to her when she's asleep and dreaming. These dreams unsettle her a little bit and she doesn't like to dwell on them very much.
Her second power is death touch, which is much more straightforward. Any living thing that comes into contact with Rose dies immediately. There are obvious exceptions to this such as being a robot or something similar, having an immortality mutation or incredibly accelerated healing skills, but for the most part touching Rose is a really bad idea for pretty much everyone.
She can't 'turn it off' and isn't even certain if such a thing is possible, and so Rose is a constant danger to society if she doesn't watch herself. Touching her with a barrier in between her flesh and another person's (such as a glove) is enough to keep the effects of her ability at bay.
RP SAMPLE:
ANYTHING ELSE: Because there was never any evidence of foul play in Ms. Lalonde's death that could be proven her will was executed as-is, leaving Rose the sole heir to a sizable inheritance.
